"Forgive what may seem my audacity, but I don’t want my children to be merely counted among the Reformed. I want them to stand with the Reformers."
-Gregg Harris
My wife brought this quote to my attention last week and we have sort of adopted it for our own children. We don't want them to be satisfied by the small and temporal pleasures this world has to offer; we want Christ to be their treasure and for radical Christian ministry to flow from it.
Continuing some thoughts on The Rebelution, the quote above is from Gregg Harris, father to Alex and Brett, in an article on homeschooling. All I can say after reading it is "Wow." Homeschooling may or may not be for you and your children, but the responsibility of raising and discipling children is for every Christian parent. Our children need to know that Jesus Christ and Him crucified isn't who we pay homage to by giving a tithe of our money and time each week, He is our very life.
I love being a dad; but I also fear it. My boys are young but they are constantly growing and changing and passing out of phases that they will never return to. I don't want to waste this time but I want to make the most of it. I want them to capture a vision for the glory of God and "rebel" against the status quo of what has become American Christianity. My prayer is that they come to know Christ, love the church, and love the world. May God use them to name Christ where He has not yet been named somewhere in the 10/40 window or in bringing Biblical reform to the church in America. May they be bold knowing that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ and not fear the sword or what any man can do to them. May they remember the countless ma
rtyrs who died for God's glory and desire to be named with them. May they be willing to let goods and kindred go, saying goodbye to mom and dad to preach the Gospel. May they love their wives as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for it. May they love their own children, teaching them the Gospel and praying for God to develop and use them. May they give their lives away in the service of others and of the Great King. May they not be satisfied with things too little; the things of the world. But may they be satisfied in Christ alone. Whatever they do, whether in the ministry or in a 40 hour work week, may they do all to the glory of God.
*Just as a footnote, Gregg Harris will be preaching at Bethlehem Baptist Church to conclude a current series on youth May 17-18, 2008.
