One of the greatest arguments against election is that it hinders and dulls a passion for evangelism. I would not argue that it hasn't, for any truth taken too far can be dangerous. In the past people have taken the Deity of Christ too far and denied His humanity, and vice versa. Some have taken election and predestination too far and have turned themselves into fatalists and have been called "hyper-calvinists." Friend, you can call me what you want, but please don't call me a fatalist. If I were a fatalist I would have no concern for prayer, evangelism, or spiritual growth in myself or others.
I firmly believe from the Word of God as well as church history that a Biblical view of God's sovereignty in electing sinners to salvation will fan the flame of evangelism and give a passion for missions. It would surprise you to research the theology of great missionaries and find out that they held a high view of God's sovereignty in salvation. The truth is that God has chosen His elect; but He uses humans to bring them the message. How are we doing in this department?
I see no point or Biblical basis for trying to talk someone in to accepting Christ if I believe they can only respond by self determination. However, when I read the Words of Jesus in John 6:37 that tells me all that the Father has given Him shall come to Him, and that He has commissioned us to preach the Gospel to every creature, it gives me confidence in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ. When I read in revelation chapter five that He has redeemed those out of every kindred, tongue, people, and nation it gives me confidence in supporting missions and makes me pray for God to send forth laborers into the harvest because I know evangelism is a plan that cannot fail!
I realize that not everyone will be saved, but the elect will. God has promised (John 6:37). So let us go and let us send with the confidence that God goes with us and as we preach the Gospel to every creature to the uttermost parts of the earth, we know that God will open some hearts as He did Lydia's.
Let us give the good news of the saving grace of our God,
Brother Josh
